Q. Can I be hypnotized?
A. Yes, if you want to! All hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. I simply guide you into this relaxed, comfortable, safe state where the positive suggestions you have chosen will take effect. Anyone can be hypnotized because it is natural. You go in and out of hypnosis several times a day already, for example, while daydreaming or watching TV.
Q. What if I don't wake up?
A. That's impossible because you won't be asleep! Hypnosis is simply an altered state of consciousness or trance that is perfectly natural. You go in and out of it all day long - reading, watching TV, falling asleep, etc.
Q. Will I lose control?
A. One of the most common misconceptions is that the person in hypnosis is "under the control" of the hypnotherapist. This is simply not true, nobody has ever been made to do something in hypnosis that they would not normally do. I think this idea comes from watching stage hypnosis where the participants do all sorts of ridiculous things with the impression that they are "under the control" of the hypnotist, just think of the people who volunteer for stage hypnosis, they expect to go up and make fools of themselves and they join in the fun and play the part. People are aware and in control while in hypnosis.
You are not asleep or "out to it" in hypnosis. You are in a very comfortable and relaxed state aware of what is happening.
Q. What is Hypnosis going to feel like?
A. You will usually feel calm and relaxed, sometimes lightness or floating sensations can be experienced and you can concentrate intensely on a specific thought, memory, feeling or sensation while blocking out distractions.
Q. What happens during the session?
A. I discuss with the client what they are having trouble with and together we work out a new programme of thinking and feeling and how the client wants to be. I then assist them to put themselves into a state of hypnosis, work with the issues behind the problem and reinforce suggestions to the subconscious mind in line with what the client wants for themselves.
We all have within us the knowledge of what is best for us and the ability to achieve it. Hypnotherapy is a means of awakening this great healing power within. Hypnosis is a very pleasant experience, you are awake, conscious and in control the whole time while you are in a state of very deep relaxation. This deep relaxation alone is beneficial. When positive suggestions for change have been accepted by the subconscious mind and you reinforce them yourself they can come back as feelings that work for you and what you want with only a little effort on your part.
After hypnotherapy many clients comment that at last they are the person that they always felt they really were inside. They find themselves feeling and acting the way that they want to.
Will power does not work long term, it just emphasises the unwanted behaviour and makes us beat ourselves up more and more. Hypnotherapy is not about will power it is about changing the negative messages so our feelings work for us and not against us.
Q. How many sessions do I need?
A. The number of sessions depends on your special needs and your commitment to "home-learning." A CD and practice tools are also given with each session. These re-inforce the hypnotherapy and help you in the future. In general:
- Fears & Phobias - 2 to 5 sessions
- Weight Loss – 2 to 4 sessions
- Smoking - 2 sessions
- Sleep, Stress & Anxiety – 1 to 2 sessions
- Habits – 1 to 2 sessions
- Improved performance – 1 to 2 sessions
- Procrastination/Motivation – 1 to 2 sessions
- Improved Study – 1 to 2 sessions
- Self esteem & confidence – 1 to 2 sessions
Q. What preparation is required for the session?
A. Nothing really apart from a clear idea of what you want to achieve from the session. All that is required for success is a keen expectation and a strong desire for change. If you wear contacts please wear glasses or bring your contacts case because of possible eye movement during hypnosis.
